Beamline Scientist for Infrared Biospectroscopy | Requisition: 102085 | Hiring manager: Hans Bechtel | Deadline: July 26
The ALS is looking for Beamline Scientist for Infrared Biospectroscopy to drive biological and environmental research at the ALS Infrared Beamlines, including Beamlines 1.4, 2.4, and 5.4. The Beamline Scientist will work creatively in a multidisciplinary team to enhance the state-of-the-art microspectroscopy and nanospectroscopy beamline instruments and conduct cutting-edge infrared experiments in collaboration with the ALS user community.

Postdoctoral Scholar | Requisition: 102125 | Hiring manager: David Shapiro | Deadline: July 16
The ALS is seeking a Nanoprobe Development Postdoctoral researcher to develop a tender x-ray fluorescence nanoprobe microscope. Working within the Microscopy Program in the Photon Science Operations group, this researcher will collaborate on the design, implementation, commissioning and initial scientific use of a new scanning microscope to be installed at an existing microscopy beamline.  This work is part of an extensive program of research and development in preparation for the major upgrade to the ALS accelerator called ALS-U.

Working within ALS Photon Science Development (PSD) and ALS Photon Science Operations (PSO) groups, the Research Software Engineer will be a part of a team developing scientific computational workflows that interface with high-speed detectors, infrastructure for near real-time analysis, visualization and data management following FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles. The position works collaboratively with, or under direction of, staff, scientists, and external collaborators to derive solutions applicable to a diverse set of instruments and computational environments.

The ALS is looking for a Computer Systems Engineer to develop cutting-edge data management platforms that facilitate storage, analysis, and visualization for scientific discovery. You will collaborate with the ALS Photon Science Development (PSD) and ALS Photon Science Operations (PSO) groups to create data orchestration tools, manage data and metadata, apply data analysis algorithms, and develop user-facing applications adhering to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles. This role involves working closely with staff, scientists, and external collaborators to devise solutions suitable for diverse instruments and computational environments.

The ALS has an opening for a Radiation Physicist. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the ALS (Advance Light Source) is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Technologist who will be involved in providing diverse technical support in mechanical technology, demonstrating expertise in independent work on complex assignments, supporting the accelerator and its users. This includes developing specifications, planning methods, and applying broad mechanical and electro-mechanical knowledge to achieve desired outcomes. Additionally, there's potential for informal team leadership within the role.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Engineering Division currently has multiple openings for Mechanical Technicians to join our team on the ALS and CXRO programs.  Under the guidance of a mentor or work lead, you will be exposed to a variety of routine technical work including assembling, installing, set up, operating, testing, inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, fabricating, machining, or modifying standard scientific apparatus, parts, components, and equipment.  You will also work with systems associated and not limited to mechanical instruments, various particle accelerators, optical systems, ultra high vacuum systems, particle detectors, permanent magnets, electromagnets, cryogenic equipment, and related scientific research apparatus.

X-Ray Optics Specialist

As a scientist specializing in the development of x-ray optics and optical systems, you'll be at the forefront of designing, specifying, creating, testing, and using state-of-the-art beamlines, endstations, and experimental systems. Your contributions will drive forefront scientific tools at our user facility, harnessing ultrabright synchrotron beams with nano-scale precision. As the Advanced Light Source transitions to a diffraction-limited storage ring, you will participate in the creation of a new generation of unique systems that harness the high coherent flux and deliver light to a wide range of scientific applications.

Project Manager – Advanced Light Source Major Items of Equipment (100135)

If you are a motivated and skilled leader with a passion for scientific research and project management, this is the perfect opportunity for you to join our team at LBNL’s ALS Division. You will develop organizational and project management policies and procedures and oversee their implementation on all new capital projects being initiated, Act as a project lead for any DOE Major Item of Equipment (MIE) investments or other very large scale projects by driving the planning and development of the project scope, budget and overall project schedule and then executing the project within established scope and baseline performance, and utilize a graded approach to project management practices, maximizing project efficiency as well as cost and schedule performance. You will also act as liaison/spokesperson and represent the ALS and the Laboratory to DOE, external agencies, industrial contacts, national laboratories and other organizations.

Research Scientist - QERLIN (101378)

As a Research Scientist, you'll play a pivotal role in commissioning, operating, and maintaining our cutting-edge momentum-resolved high energy resolution RIXS system, QERLIN. Additionally, you'll be instrumental in providing user support and driving the development of scientific programs utilizing QERLIN.
