The Monoplus project is about the development of adaptive optics in a grating monochromator at a soft x-ray beamline in order to compensate for residual phase errors and enable high-speed X-Ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism.
For this, we developped a set of simulations to determine the feasibility, we designed a soft x-ray photon energy (PhEnSe) that we have demonstrated at the beamline and we are integrating a deformable mirror at ALS beamline 6.3.1 .

We are replacing the existing bendable spherical mirror at ALS beamline 6.3.1 by a bimorph mirror (with 24 piezoelectric actuatore) in order to correct any residual aberrations, coming from either substrate figure error on the grating, line spacing errors on the ruling or any other dynamic aberrations, to enable fast polarization switching.

Any adaptive optics system encomprise a deformable mirror and a feedback – usually a wavefront sensor, but in this case it's a novel diagnostics called the photon energy sensor (PhEnSe.) This diagnostics works by depositing thin films of various elements with a clear spectral signature (L-edges) on a scintillator, and illuminating it with a dispersed (and focused beam.) This allows the determination the absolute energy entering the endstation (known edge position), and the effective resolution (line width)
