Title: Coherence: The New Wave
Date: Tuesday, August 13, 1:00pm – 5:00pm (Advanced Light Source User Meeting)
Location: Bldg. 67 - Room 3111 (Chemla Room) – Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Organizers: Sophie Morley, Ken Goldberg, Sujoy Roy, Greg Su, Antoine Islegen-Wojdyla (ALS); Alex Fraño (UCSD)
Description: The upgrade of the Advanced Light Source will increase the coherent flux by 100x and has been designed to be unsurpassed by any currently envisioned technology. This will position the ALS as a world leader in coherent soft x-ray science for years to come. This workshop aims to showcase current coherent x-ray science with an outlook on what new science may be accessed with the boost in coherence. Recently, coherence-based techniques such as coherent diffraction imaging (CDI), holography, ptychography, and x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) have seen increasing international development and have demonstrated their use for broad applications, from biosciences to physics and materials sciences. This workshop aims to provide users a better understanding of what coherence is and how it could benefit their current or future research at the ALS (better sensitivity, more resolution, faster measurements). The workshop will feature a short tutorial with some basic coherence principles and fundamental theoretical concepts in addition to scientific and technical talks from international and local experts on the current and future use of x-ray coherence.
Agenda:
Optics and Coherence (Antoine Islegen-Wojdyla, Advanced Light Source, LBNL)
A coherent soft x-ray scattering view on electron behavior in correlated materials (Claudio Mazzoli, NSLS-II, BNL)
Coherent Surface Scattering Imaging (CSSI) at APS-U for 3D Mesoscale Structures at Surfaces and Interfaces (Zhang Jiang, (Advanced Photon Source, ANL)
High-resolution Correlative Imaging with Coherent X-rays (Xiaojing Huang NSLS-II, BNL)
New Dimensions in Coherent Phase Contrast Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (Colin Ophus National Center for Electron Microscopy, LBNL)
Panel Discussion
Claudio Mazzoli at the ALS UM Coherence workshop (August 2024)
